Nia DaCosta’s upcoming Candyman reboot is still very much incubating in the bowels of development. And no, it won’t feature Aquaman actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the role previously occupied by Tony Todd.
That’s according to DaCosta herself, who recently sat down with Collider (h/t Bloody Disgusting) to discuss all things Candyman, including the involvement of writer-director-producer Jordan Peele, who looks set to continue his red-hot filmmaking streak after delivering two modern horror classics in Get Out and this year’s Us.
The interview itself is naturally light on plot details, but DaCosta did take a moment to stress that her upcoming reboot will not replace Tony Todd, in which a murderous soul (read: Candyman) is summoned by an unsuspecting grad student. Horror ensues.
Via Collider:
Well, it’s been slightly misreported. I can’t say what’s happening in the film because we want it to be a surprise, but he’s not replacing Tony Todd. That’s been reported, and I was just like, ‘I don’t know what to say about this. This is not right.’
That tells us Tony Todd may well have a part to play in next year’s Candyman reboot. Indeed, while speaking to Forbes (again, h/t Bloody Disgusting), the man himself touched base on Candyman, and why he’s confident that it’ll please those fans of the original cult classic from ’92.
In Jordan Peele’s case, I really like what I’ve seen of his work so far. I have full confidence in that remake being in competent hands and he and I have talked. I can’t say anything further than that, but I think the fans are going to be happy.
Candyman is yet to carve out a release date of its own, but we’ll notify you if and when that changes.
