Tom Cruise’s seasoned fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is about to reach dizzying new heights with his slick jet.
Photos revealed from the set of Top Gun: Maverick (h/t Revenge of the Fans) bring us that little bit closer to Tom Cruise’s futuristic aircraft, which is undoubtedly a huge upgrade from the one that originally took flight during Tony Scott’s cult classic from 1986.
This one appears more slick and refined, and will no doubt ensure Maverick feels the need (the need for speed) when he climbs into the cockpit come 2020. And yes, you read the right; Top Gun: Maverick will be releasing in the summer of 2020, after Paramount announced plans to ground its ’80s-inspired sequel for a full year.
But filming continues apace, and Revenge of the Fans has today offered an up-close look at Cruise’s new fighter jet on the tarmac, though it’s unclear if this is the same aircraft from the actor’s original teaser…
The Mission: Impossible – Fallout star is all set to reprise the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who has seemingly taken on the role of a flight instructor since his maiden voyage back in ’86. He’ll presumably be barking orders at a slew of new recruits, though beyond that, Paramount is yet to reveal any concrete story information about the long-in-development sequel.
One exception to that rule is the ensemble cast for Top Gun: Maverick, which now includes such A-listers as Jon Hamm and Westworld star Ed Harris, who will be appearing alongside Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Thomasin McKenzie, and Val Kilmer’s inimitable LT Tom Kazansky – better known to you, I and the cadets of the NAS Miramar base as the Ice Man.
