DreamWorks Animation has brought us a number of great family films that consistently make me wish I was eight years old again.

The studio has been on an impressive run lately and today, we have our hands on the first trailer for their prehistoric family adventure The Croods. Co-directed by How to Train Your Dragon collaborators Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, the film looks beautiful.

The Croods are an isolated and introverted family led by their patriarch, voiced by Nicolas Cage, who are unwittingly thrust into an uncharted and fantastical world. They’re quickly joined by a resourceful newcomer, voiced by Ryan Reynolds, who becomes their guide on what becomes the first ever road trip.

Rounding out the cast are Emma Stone (who voices Cage’s curious daughter Eep), Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman.

With stunning visuals and bright colors, the trailer looks very promising. However, it doesn’t really give us much in the way of the story, and Reynolds’ character doesn’t make an appearance at all.

We’ll have to wait until the next trailer to be able to form a more informed opinion on the film because in the end, looks aren’t everything. That being said, I’m going to remain optimistic about this one.

The Croods is set to hit theaters in 3D on March 1st, 2013.
