Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman has starred in a number of films over the years and has even tried his hand at producing with his ill-fated TV series Luck. Now, the 75-year-old has taken the next step to directing, and we have our hands on the first trailer for his feature film directorial debut, the dramatic comedy Quartet.
In the film, Reggie (Tom Courtenay), Wilf (Billy Connolly), and Cissy (Pauline Collins) are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Each year they stage a concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday, but their plans are disrupted by the arrival of Reggie’s ex-wife Jean (Sheridan Smith) who continues to act like the operatic diva she once was, yet she refuses to sing.
With an excellent cast and some witty one-liners, the trailer looks very promising. Quartet won’t have a blockbuster weekend, and it may not attract as many young moviegoers as it would like, but it will definitely hit a note with the older crowd.
It has a more sophisticated premise than your average comedy and an experienced group of actors who’ve worked in a number of different genres. It seems like a perfect film to showcase Hoffman’s directorial talents.
Quartet comes to theaters in limited release on December 28, 2012.
