Remember Red? The 2010 action film that pulled in a healthy $200 million at the worldwide box office? What's that? Now you remember? Good, because a sequel is in the works, titled Red 2 of course, and we now have the first trailer for it.

Remember Red? The 2010 action film that pulled in a healthy $200 million at the worldwide box office? What’s that? Now you remember? Good, because a sequel is in the works, titled Red 2 of course, and we now have the first trailer for it.

Despite the fact that we don’t really need a sequel, we’re getting one anyways and judging by the first trailer, it looks like more of the same. I mean, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, I had decent fun watching Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren go at it for a while but still, how much of this bland, mindless and forgettable action do we need?

Filling in for the original director (Robert Schwentke) is Dean Parisot, whose most notable credit is probably Galaxy Quest. It looks like he’s giving us just another rehash of the first film, complete with all the lame jokes and silly action that we saw a few years ago. The cast itself isn’t bad, with the above mentioned actors being joined by Anthony Hopkins, Mary-Louise Parker, Catherin Zeta-Jones and more, but Red 2 just doesn’t look like it’s going to do much for me.

I have no doubt that it will make Summit Entertainment a healthy profit, especially with the writers from the first film (Erich and Jon Hoeber) penning the script, but I just can’t see it offering up much in the way of new or original. But then again, sequels rarely do. The story sounds similar and the film itself looks identical to its predecessor, so in other words, if you didn’t care for the first film, don’t get your hopes up for Red 2.

Check out the first trailer below and let us know what you think.

Red 2 opens on August 2nd, 2013.
