Tyrese Gibson Continues To Tease Green Lantern Role

Furious 7 actor Tyrese Gibson has devoted a great deal of his social media presence to teasing the possibility that he may play Green Lantern John Stewart in the DC Cinematic Universe. He began campaigning hard for the role back in January, when some fan art planted the idea in his head. Since then, he's even gone so far as to visit Warner Brothers for the role. We don't yet know what that meeting may have led to, but if Gibson's latest teases are any indication, we could find out as soon as San Diego Comic-Con next month.

Furious 7 actor Tyrese Gibson has devoted a great deal of his social media presence to teasing the possibility that he may play Green Lantern John Stewart in the DC Cinematic Universe. He began campaigning hard for the role back in January, when some fan art planted the idea in his head. Since then, he’s even gone so far as to visit Warner Brothers for a meeting about the role. We don’t yet know what that meeting may have led to, but if Gibson’s latest teases are any indication, we could find out as soon as San Diego Comic-Con next month.

Following rumors that Chris Pine was still circling the role of Hal Jordan – despite being in talks for the role of Wonder Woman love interest Steve Trevor – and word that 2020’s Green Lantern reboot would in fact focus on more than just one power-ring wielding human, Gibson took to Instagram to post the following bit of fan art:

That’s not the first time in recent memory that Gibson brought up the new rumors, either. Early in the week, he posted this:

Shit just got real – #doubleoath #doubletrouble #GreenLantern #WB #VoltronPictures

He was asked directly about his Green Lantern campaign by E!, and though he refused to confirm that he would in fact be playing John Stewart, he remained coy and optimistic about the possibility:

“I took the oath. I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about… You never know. I might be [at SDCC] on the other side of an announcement. You know, listen, there are certain things I can’t speak on. But I will say that, however way this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of Green Lantern.”

At this point, it’s impossible to tell if Tyrese Gibson will actually play John Stewart or if he’s just making a ballsy campaign move. Hopefully we’ll find out for sure though when WB takes the Hall H stage at San Diego Comic-Con next month.

The Green Lantern reboot is scheduled to hit theaters – with or without Tyrese Gibson – on July 19th, 2020.
