Less than 24 hours ago, word broke that Matt Damon & Paul Greengrass were in negotiations to do another Bourne film, causing action fans everywhere to be up all night with excitement over the possibility of another epic entry into the best rogue agent series ever. Now, it looks like everyone lost sleep for no reason at all, as Universal says the rumors about the negotiations are untrue.

Variety reached out to the studio, who denied any truth to the rumors. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean negotiations aren’t happening. If Bourne and Greengrass are in talks, Universal wouldn’t want anyone knowing about it until both are officially signed on. But then again, there’s always a chance that Universal is actually telling the truth here, and Bourne 5 will just be Jeremy Renner and some other director, which would be incredibly disappointing at this point.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually think Renner played the rogue agent really well, and he was quite enjoyable to watch in The Bourne Legacy, but that film just fell so far short of the standard that the original trilogy set. The opportunity to see Damon’s Bourne and Renner’s Cross team up to take down whatever government is after them would be something that any action fan should be excited about, so the fact it may not be happening definitely puts a damper on my day.

The studio recently hired Anthony Peckham to write the script, and Renner is already signed on to star, but that’s all we know about the upcoming Bourne film at this point.

What do you think of Universal denying the rumors? Do you think it’s possible that Damon and Greengrass may still be back for Bourne? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
