For many years now, Marvel Studios has been operating on a tight schedule, informing fans well in advance of every planned entry in the long-awaited build-up to this year’s Infinity War and next year’s Avengers 4. But for the first time in an era, the future of the MCU is looking like a pretty mysterious place, and not just because of the feel-bad cliffhanger that the recent fight against Thanos left us with.
It’s obvious that Avengers 4 is going to bring some major changes to the saga, presumably concluding the stories of many a famed superhero while redirecting the arcs of others and paving the way for some fresh faces. After that, Phase 4 will officially be kicking off with Spider-Man: Far From Home likely followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but official details remain a little thin about Marvel’s game plan beyond that.
That being said, a clue for the future could be found in a production listing for an upcoming flick. Omega Underground reports that a new Marvel movie’s expected to begin filming in June in the United Kingdom, indicating a summer 2020 release date for this unnamed pic.
Among the potential projects supposedly in works, it’s a distinct possibility that Doctor Strange 2 will be taking this slot. Benedict Cumberbatch recently accepted a substantial offer to return as the Sorcerer Supreme, while director Scott Derrickson has also teased his further involvement with the character a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, we can’t rule out this listing going to the long awaited Black Widow movie, with the film’s director confirmed last month and rumors suggesting a 2020 shooting schedule across parts of Europe.
Whatever it is that Marvel Studios has planned for June next year, don’t expect Kevin Feige and his tight-lipped peers to let us know anytime soon. If you really want answers on the future of the MCU, perhaps the best you can do is wait until Avengers 4 lands in cinemas on May 3rd, 2019.
