‘Venom 3’ enlists a piece of the DCEU to craft its visual appearance

He worked on both 'Justice League' and 'Zack Synder’s Justice League.'

The upcoming Venom 3 is about to start shooting next month, and producers have brought on a very special cinematographer to handle the overall look of the film – none other than Justice League and Zack Synder’s Justice League cinematographer Fabian Wagner.

Wagner will shoot the sequel, which is a part of Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters and not Marvel itself. You want accolades? Wagner has those in spades. He worked on Game of Thrones and picked up an American Society of Cinematographers Award for the episode “Battle of the Bastards.”

He was nominated again for his work on The Crown, and he got an Emmy nomination for his work on the BBC show Sherlock, per The Hollywood Reporter. He’s also working on the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. All this to say Wagner is well qualified to handle Venom.

The third iteration of the popular franchise sees Tom Hardy back as the titular character with a new director: Kelly Marcel. Marcel was a writer on the first two films, and she worked with Wagner on 2021’s Let There Be Carnage, so he’s not completely new to what’s going on.

In an interview with The Spiral last year, Wagner revealed that he always knew he wanted to be a Director of Photography on movies, from a really young age.

“I had no idea what the job entailed but then I went to a set one day with his step dad when I was about 14, that’s when I realised I wanted to become a DP. Back then I thought it just consisted of camera work, I took a big interest in cinematography and photography. I soon learnt that it involved lighting and creating atmosphere.”

There’s no release date for Venon 3 just yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
