Venom And Sinister Six Updates Hint At Carnage And The Team Roster

Though The Amazing Spider-Man 2 doesn't hit theaters for a few more weeks (or days, depending on which country you're in), most of the talk surrounding the film has been in response to its already-announced sequels and spin-offs. Sony is aiming to make a cinematic universe around the friendly neighborhood web slinger, and since he's the only hero that the studio owns the rights to, it looks like villain movies are the only way to go.

A recent post on the Daily Bugle Tumblr page, a site Sony has been using as viral marketing for months now, pointed towards Carnage existing within this new Spidey-verse. A news story was written by Eddie Brock, the future Venom, and it reported on the arrest of a man named Cletus Kasady, who fans will recognize as the alter-ego of the super-villain Carnage. When asked by IGN about whether or not a Venom movie would be a good intro point for Carnage, Tolmach said, “The idea of Venom and Carnage? Taking it into consideration. Watch out for this Venom movie. We are crazy excited.”

One major point of contention from fans about a Venom spinoff is the fact that Venom is, well, a villain. And a pretty great one at that. Yes, some comics have had different versions of the character, sometimes in an anti-hero role, but the Venom we know and love has always been one of Spider-Man’s biggest foils and greatest threats. Would a feature film surrounding the character work? With Carnage, it just might.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Carnage is one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous foes. A creature created when the Venom symbiote bonds with serial killer Cletus Kasady, Carnage is a deadly killer. In the comics, Spider-Man wasn’t strong enough to defeat him alone and had to team up with Venom to do so.

Though we don’t know whether or not Spider-Man will make an appearance in the Venom film, the idea of Carnage as the movie’s villain is intriguing. It would be a great way to show Venom as an anti-hero, going up against someone who’s far more dangerous than he is. Add in the fact that fans have been practically begging to see Carnage brought to life on the big screen, and you’ve immediately piqued their interest and all but guaranteed their movie ticket purchase.

Of course, we’re still a ways off from these films, and will have to first see what Marc Webb does with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 before we see what Drew Goddard and Alex Kurtzman have planned for Sinister Six and Venomrespectively.
