Visual effects wunderkind and owner of Blur studios, Tim Miller has been pursued by 20th Century Fox and will be directing the Deadpool movie, tentatively titled X-Men Origins: Deadpool. The film has come about due to the success of the character’s appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which prompted the studio to greenlight a whole movie based around the character as a vehicle for actor Ryan Reynolds.
The hunt for the director has been long and arduous and many big names such as Robert Rodriguez were mooted. Miller is a interesting choice after many marquee names would have presumably been considered. He is obviously a very talented guy. He has worked on the previous X-Men movies so he has a knowledge of the mythology and his Blur studios is currently at work on doing the pre-viz on Ron Howard‘s adaptation of The Dark Tower.
For me however, I am a little more suspect of the choice, visual effects guys moving to be film directors have never been successful at all, look at Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, which then gave us Skyline. I don’t see why they don’t give it to a trusting, bankable director who the studio know will do a good job. Hopefully this will work out though. According to reports filming could begin in the Fall.
