Warner Bros. Interested In A Standalone Black Canary Movie

If next year's Birds of Prey performs well at the box office, Warner Bros. is strongly considering adding a standalone Black Canary film to its lineup.

While the DC Extended Universe is by no means in shambles, it’d be a stretch to say that it comes close to being as coherent and interconnected as the MCU. Granted, there have only been seven films so far (compared to Marvel’s 22), but it’s safe to say Warner Bros. has fallen victim to more production bumps than it would like to admit.

Aside from Justice League‘s change in staff (Joss Whedon stepped in for Zack Snyder), 2021’s The Batman has gone through a handful of writers, directors, and actors, with Twilight veteran Robert Pattinson taking on the role of the Caped Crusader. The Suicide Squad (not to be confused for the 2016 movie of a similar name) is looking to relaunch the franchise, and let’s not get started on this year’s Joker, which isn’t even part of the DCEU in the first place.

Needless to say, there’s a lot up in the air, but it hasn’t stopped Warner Bros. from planning for the future. Speaking exclusively to We Got This Covered, an industry insider has revealed that the studio is interested in producing a standalone Black Canary movie, depending on whether or not Birds of Prey does well at the box office.

For those who aren’t up to date, here’s a quick rundown. Set sometime after the events of Suicide Squad, the film follows a newly-single Harley Quinn, who joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to protect Cassandra Cain, a young girl who’s being targeted by Black Mask. Jurnee Smollett-Bell, best known for her roles on Friday Night Lights and True Blood, is set to portray Black Canary, and would (presumably) return to the role should a standalone movie be greenlit.

While this new tidbit of info hasn’t been confirmed by Warner Bros., we’re hoping that the studio can begin to lay down a solid plan for the future of the DCEU. Personally, I can’t wait to see how Birds of Prey turns out, and wouldn’t mind if it led to a few spinoff movies (fingers crossed for a standalone Harley Quinn film) down the line.
