Whether you’re a Wachowski fan or not, you’re in the minority if you’re not intrigued by their next flick, Jupiter Ascending. Another futuristic jaunt by the siblings of sci-fi, the marketing machine has presented us with a smattering of previews so far. Now, we have the first clip to have a butchers at.

… and it’s a bit odd, to be honest. But hey, what did we expect? First off, it’s a 36-second glimpse. Channing Tatum’s half-wolf, half-albino hybrid attempts to explain the science behind his fancy rocket boots to a non-plussed Mila Kunis. There’s hardly sufficient time to provide ANY background whatsoever to what’s being discussed. That’s pretty dang promising! Does this mean we’re getting a richly-layered space mythology to rival the insane world-building of The Matrix?!

From the film’s announcement, up to the latest rash of trailers, speculation has built up over what could be the year’s biggest hit. After all, The Matrix was a dark horse in the running prior to release, and now look at it – fifteen years after the fact, it is still held in massive esteem by fans and critics. Here’s hoping Jupiter Ascending has the clout to do the same.

Jupiter Ascending arrives in cinemas on July 18th. Check out the new clip below and let us know what you think.

Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.
