Though Venom was generally slated by critics for its dated visuals and lackluster story, you can’t fault Tom Hardy’s performance as Eddie Brock.
Going into the release of Sony’s budding franchise-starter, it was nigh on certain that Hardy, famous for his portrayal of brooding baddies thanks to Mad Max, Bronson and The Dark Knight Rises, would deliver a tour-de-force performance as Brock’s snarling alter-ego. And sure enough, the British thesp was arguably Venom‘s saving grace, and part of the reason why it’s managed to defy the critics on its journey to $845 million worldwide.
That’s an incredible tally by anyone’s standard, and further proof that a Venom sequel is nigh on certain. But before we get too carried away about what the future holds, the good folks at Collider have premiered an exclusive Blu-ray clip from Sony’s superhero romp (see above) which takes us behind the scenes, as we watch Tom Hardy wrangle the symbiote under control.
Further details on Venom‘s special features can be found here, and those who decide to pick up Sony’s standalone superhero movie on home video will be pleased to note that the Blu-ray comes packing three – count ’em, three – deleted and extended scenes, along with a mini-documentary of sorts that charts the symbiote’s comic book history. Suffice it to say, it’s a must-own for anyone with even a passing interest in Eddie Brock and his raging alter-ego.
Helmed by Ruben Fleischer of Zombieland fame, Venom was headed up by Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott and Woody Harrelson, and you can look for the symbiote to slither its way onto digital platforms next week, before arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on December 18th – just in time for the holiday season.
