WB Has Plans For The Question In The DCEU

Next year's Birds of Prey won't just see the return of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, but will also introduce a new set of heroines in the DC Extended Universe to boot. Fans are most excited to see Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress. However, it seems the one to watch might be Rosie Perez's Renee Montoya.

We Got This Covered has been informed by our source that Warner Bros. is working on introducing The Question into the DCEU. Seeing as Montoya’s going to appear in Cathy Yan’s female-led team-up movie, our source believes that DC is likely going to go with her version of the vigilante instead of the classic Vic Saga iteration.

The Question, recognizable for his/her trench coat, fedora and faceless appearance while in costume, was originally created by Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko in 1967. After being introduced as a GCPD cop in Batman: The Animated Series in the 1990s, Montoya took over as The Question during the “52” comics storyline across 2006/7.

DC certainly deserves credit for always pushing for female-led movies, with 2017’s Wonder Woman predating Captain Marvel as the first superheroine film of the decade. Assuming Marvel don’t beat them to the punch again, a solo flick for Montoya’s The Question could become the first comic book pic led by a gay protagonist.

Then again, the version of Montoya introduced in Birds of Prey doesn’t sound like the sort of character you’d base a standalone franchise around. From what we’ve heard, Perez’s character will be the hard-bitten cop chasing Harley, Black Canary and Huntress around Gotham City, believing them to be up to no good. Still, as the actress is 54, it would be refreshing to have a female action hero on screen who’s similar in age to the likes of Tom Cruise or Robert Downey Jr.

In any case, if DC is thinking of doing more with Montoya as The Question, the studio will no doubt wait until Birds of Prey comes out to progress further.
