‘We’ll get it on the list’: ‘Extraction’ director taking ideas for where the threequel could head

Sam Hargrave, the director of Extraction 2, is considering suggestions regarding a potential third installment of the high-octane franchise.

In an interview with Collider, the filmmaker was captivated by the suggestion of setting the next movie in Tokyo. He could barely contain his excitement and enthusiastically welcomed the concept:

“Yeah, I mean, just putting Tyler in a place like that seems like putting a bull in a China shop. I love it. Send me an email, we’ll pass it down the line, we’ll get it on the list. There’s a long list of places that we could possibly go, I’m sure Tokyo is already there. Let’s move it to the top, how about that?”

Hargrave wears many different hats in the entertainment industry. Before the release of Extraction, he was best known for his work as a stunt coordinator on several of the Russo brothers’ projects, including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. He also choreographed the stunts for The Hunger Games, Suicide Squad, Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool 2, before taking a nimble leap from Marvel to Star Wars universe as a second-unit director of The Mandalorian.

Though Extraction received mixed reviews upon its April 24, 2020 release, it enjoyed record-breaking success on Netflix, commanding 99 million viewers in four weeks to storm to the top of the list of the streaming giant’s most-watched original films.

The sequel sees Rake exit his retirement in Austria to embark on a rescue mission in Georgia. This time, it’s personal, as the lives of his former sister-in-law and her family hang in the balance. Extraction 2 is outshining its predecessor in terms of critical and commercial success, with Netflix wasting no time announcing that a third installment is in the works.

Extraction 2 proves that for characters like Tyler Rake, retirement is overrated. With a third entry in the pipeline, it’s going to be exciting if he ends up in Tokyo in the next chapter of the story.
