There’s less than a month left now until we finally get our grubby mitts on Avengers: Infinity War and see if Marvel Studios have lived up their promise. Can tossing every single hero from the last ten years of MCU movies into a blender and throwing the contents against a gigantic purple CGI Josh Brolin really result in a coherent film? Maybe, and if nothing else, the House of Ideas is certainly leaning into the concept if this jam-packed promotional standee is anything to go by.
The display features a massive 23 superheroes, jostling for space around a gigantic gold Avengers symbol. They range from A-listers like Chris Evans’ Captain America, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow to less obvious characters like Pom Klementieff’s Mantis, Danai Gurira’s Okoye and Benedict Wong’s.. uh, Wong. Sadly, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man looks to be missing out (unless he’s really really tiny). Ditto for Hawkeye – but no surprises there.
Anyways, check it out in the gallery down below, along with some recently released posters, and see what you think:
Interestingly, the standee groups the characters by the colors of the Infinity Stones. It could just be to make a neat image, but there’s also an outside chance that it’s a clue as to the structure of the film’s story. We already know from the trailers that Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man spend a lot of time together, as do Black Widow, Black Panther and the Hulk. Plus, it’d make things a bit more comprehensible to split the heroes into improvised ‘teams’ to secure each of the all-important Stones, right?
Above all that, it’s simply a geeky thrill to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe in one place like this. It’s strange to think that a mere decade ago we were about to find out whether Iron Man – the studio’s last throw of the financial dice – could really hold its own against the titanic hype for The Dark Knight.Â
Here’s hoping that Avengers: Infinity War lives up to expectations. I’ll see you there opening night!
