What is the plot of ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny?’

TL;DR? Indy punches some Nazis.

Indy is back in action in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Directed by Ford v. Ferrari‘s James Mangold, who takes over for Steven Spielberg, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to lukewarm reviews.

In this chapter of the adventure, set in 1969, 12 years after the events of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the heroic archeologist faces off against evil Nazis, led by Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Jürgen Voller. Voller is a former Nazi scientist who is now working for NASA, aiding the United States in the Space Race against the Soviet Union.

Hoping to go back in time and make the Nazis win World War II, Voller has his sights set on a precious artifact called the Antikythera — aka the Dial of Destiny, a dial invented by Archimedes to calculate and calibrate astronomical phenomena, which he believes can be used to time travel.

Flashback to 30 years before ’69, when Indy was trying to keep that same Dial out of the hands of Hitler himself while fighting one of his lackeys atop a moving train. During the confrontation, the Dial was lost, and now all parties involved are looking for it, including Indy’s very own goddaughter Helena Shaw, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is likely the last time Harrison Ford, who is now 80, will play the beloved professor. It’s the fifth and final installment of the Indiana Jones series, and it’s produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm. Indy’s final adventure opens in theaters June 30, 2023.
