After being left out of the immense success of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, and its sequel, we heard that William Shatner may finally show up for a cameo appearance in Star Trek 3. Now, information on how he’ll factor in has finally been revealed. If you want to preserve any story details until the film hits theaters though, trek no more into this article as it contains potentially massive spoilers.

For those of you who are unaware, William Shatner is to Chris Pine as Leonard Nimoy is to Zachary Quinto. In other words, Shatner was the originator of the one and only Captain Kirk, who Pine currently plays in the feature films. How this relates to the overarching story and the time-traveling rules set in the Star Trek universe, I’m not sure, but fans will no doubt be ecstatic no matter what dock they find themselves in.

Star Trek 3, directed by Roberto Orci, is slated to be released in 2016. If only we could transwarp two years in the future….
