Wonder Woman Director Wishes Captain Marvel Team A Great Opening Weekend

The constant comparisons between Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman may not be particularly fair to either camp, but it looks like director Patty Jenkins isn’t seeing any rivalry between the two female superhero outings, since she’s now taken to Twitter to show her support for Carol Danvers’ MCU debut.

Jenkins’ post consists of some fan art showing Carol and Diana flying side by side, along with a caption wishing Captain Marvel all the best for its opening weekend:

“Congratulations team Captain Marvel! Can’t wait to see it and our whole WW crew wish you a great weekend. Love this gorgeous piece by [John Yandall]!”

So far, things are looking pretty good for Captain Marvel’s opening weekend haul, with Deadline recently projecting a domestic gross of $150 million in the film’s first three days. Variety, meanwhile, has placed this figure at upwards of $125 million, which still puts the movie above the likes of Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Earlier this year, Captain Marvel’s executive producer Jonathan Schwartz reflected on the impact of Wonder Woman, recalling how the film spoke to female moviegoers in a way that no superhero flick had before it. Schwartz went on to say that he wanted Captain Marvel to “feel distinct, not just from other female-lead movies, but from all the other Marvel movies as well.”

So far, the film has fared well with its earliest viewers, with the feature currently holding a score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 229 reviews. We’ll find out if the general public is similarly enthused when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th. As for Diana, you’ll be able to see her back on the big screen when the Jenkins-helmed Wonder Woman 1984 comes out on June 5th, 2020.
