Warner Bros. has called upon Pan and Wonder Woman scribe Jason Fuchs to construct a new draft of the upcoming Minecraft movie, according to Variety.

Before putting pen to paper, Fuchs will take the reins from Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) to flesh out the concept with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenney, the latter of whom will take point as director. A worldwide phenomenon in the video game industry, it’s small wonder why it has taken so long for a Minecraft movie to gain some traction. Warner Bros. first scooped up screen rights for the IP back in February after striking a deal with Swedish developer Mojang AB and parent company Microsoft.

Plot details for the Minecraft movie are all but non-existent at this point in time, though it’s almost a foregone conclusion that Warner has one eye trained on its franchise of LEGO movies for inspiration. Since its debut in 2009, Mojang’s über-popular sandbox title has found success for allowing players to engineer their own creations – and, by effect, stories – but nevertheless, developer Telltalle Games has displayed the ways in which one can wrap a narrative around Minecraft‘s most basic concept. Survival mode, creative mode and adventure mode are the three pillars of the base game and, if we were to crack out the crystal ball, we’d wager that WB’s video game movie would play around with those trademark mechanics.

Minecraft is currently a long, long way off considering Warner has tentatively slated the motion picture for release on May 25, 2019. It’s a part of Hollywood’s new wave of movie adaptations simmering in development, with Assassin’s Creed being the one closest to release, and it’ll bow on December 21. Fuchs, meanwhile, is also attached to pen the long-gestating Lobo movie at WB.
