Don’t Expect To Learn Much About Cable In Deadpool 2

2018's Deadpool 2 isn't just a sequel to last year's surprise hit R-rated movie starring the Merc with a Mouth. It's also setting the stage for an upcoming X-Force film - based around the team of militant mutant heroes led by Cable. Josh Brolin will be stepping into the shoes of the time-travelling cyborg for the franchise and has now dished out some new details on both Wade Wilson's next big screen outing and the aforementioned X-Force.

2018’s Deadpool 2 isn’t just a sequel to last year’s surprise hit R-rated movie starring the Merc with a Mouth. It’s also setting the stage for an upcoming X-Force film – based around the team of militant mutant heroes led by Cable. Josh Brolin will be stepping into the shoes of the time-travelling cyborg for the franchise and has now dished out some new details on both Wade Wilson’s next big screen outing and the aforementioned X-Force.

First off, he discussed how Deadpool 2 will clearly sow the seeds for more from Cable in the future. The main way it will do this is apparently through keeping a lot about the character a mystery, leaving X-Force to really get to grips with him.

“I think we’re not trying to hide the fact that this is the beginning of Cable and absolutely not the end. I think when you’re sensitive about how you appreciate it. When you’re sensitive about how you reveal this character there’s a sense of mystery in it, so then when we finally get into X-Force that you’re going to be with this guy full blown all the time. There’s a lot to be revealed.”

With his other comic book movie role as Thanos presumably coming to an end in Marvel’s Avengers 4, it’s handy for Brolin that he’s walked straight into another multi-picture franchise to occupy his time. The actor went on to reiterate that there’s a four-movie plan in place for Cable and that he intends to keep the character very close to the original comic book creation.

As for when work on X-Force will begin, Brolin had this to say:

“Yeah, I think it’s sometime next year or soon thereafter. It might even be … It depends. It all depends. It depends on how Deadpool does, but I don’t think that’s a make or break kind of deal. Drew Goddard is already involved in it. He’s into it now.”

According to the actor, Goddard has already discussed the movie with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, who was instrumental in getting X-Force off the ground in the first place.

“I know he and Ryan [Reynolds] were meeting. I’ve met him once, and so this is all kind of going ahead. How it goes ahead, I know that we’re preparing or they’re preparing, and I know that it’s something that I’m set to do. When it happens they’re going to put together is such a big . . . I think Drew Goddard is doing his movie right now and then once he’s kind of wrapped up with that and this movie comes out I think we’ll be ready to start the other one.”

Goddard is well known to Marvel fans for creating Netfllix’s Daredevil and for being attached to the discarded Sinister Six movie a while back. His next film – Bad Times at the El Royale, starring Chris Hemsworth and Jeff Bridges – is set to begin filming next January. With that in mind, we would expect X-Force to go before the cameras sometime in the latter stages of 2018. Deadpool 2, meanwhile, lands in theaters on June 1st.
