Despite not being romantically linked in the comics, the X-Men films – specifically First Class and this year’s Days of Future Past – have included some “will they or won’t they” tension between main antagonist Magneto and his shape-shifting right-hand-lady, Mystique. That dynamic will apparently continue to blossom, and may in fact take center stage when the mutants return for another big screen outing in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
According to a new report, the Mystique/Magneto romance will be “front and center” in Apocalypse as a way for Fox to bank on the immense star power of both Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, who are arguably the two biggest names that the franchise has to offer at the moment. That’s not to take anything away from the likes of Hugh Jackman or James McAvoy, but with The Hunger Games phenomenon in full swing (the film series will have just come to an end by the time Apocalypse hits theaters) and the multitude of high-profile and acclaimed projects on Fassbender’s slate, it makes sense that the studio would want to put Lawrence and Fassbender in the spotlight.
With that said, they certainly haven’t been given a short shrift so far in the last two X-Men films; a Mystique/Magneto/Beast love triangle was set up in First Class, and the personal tensions between Magneto and Mystique hit a boiling point in Days of Future Past. So, the idea of shedding more light on that relationship isn’t all too surprising, and probably won’t take away from the, well, apocalyptic events that the film has in store.
Tell us, are you interested in seeing the romance between Mystique and Magneto grow and become a major focus of X-Men: Apocalypse? Or were you hoping some of the supporting characters would get more screentime this time around? Let us know in the comments section below.
Directed by Bryan Singer, X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled to hit theaters on May 27th, 2016.
