These days, it’s almost a forgone conclusion that every superhero flick (though Warner Bros.’ DC movies have avoided them, funnily enough) is going to have an after-credits scene, or “stinger” as they’ve been referred to.
Marvel Studios have had great success using them as both humorous, but ultimately pointless fluff (see Iron Man 3), and as intriguing lead-ins to future movies – and it sounds like Fox has gone for the latter option with X-Men: Apocalypse
The studio hasn’t always utilized them with their X-movies movies, but Days of Future Past teased the emergence of En Sabah Nur, and it sounds like Apocalypse might just herald the introduction of another popular villain from the comics in its final moments.
Here’s what writer/producer Simon Kinberg had to say about the scene to Collider:
It’s a nod toward potentially a lot of different movies. I mean certainly the Wolverine movie is related to what happens at the end of it, but there’s also another character that’s introduced, at least in name, in the tag and he could show up in any host of different X-Men films. Maybe a Gambit movie, maybe another X-Men movie.
Though that may seem like a pretty vague tease, the mention of Gambit is very telling. Evil geneticist Mr. Sinister has close ties to the card-flinging Cajun, so my guess is he’s the character that’s referenced in the stinger.
We’ll find out for sure when X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27.
