X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to feature a pretty major death, and we have the full details on who meets their maker and how it happens.

At this point, it’s no secret that X-Men: Dark Phoenix will bump off a major character when it hits theaters.

In their red-hot cover story from late last year, Entertainment Weekly teased that Dark Phoenix will contain a “massive twist halfway through that will irrevocably change the course of the franchise,” while everyone’s also already laid eyes on that photo depicting a graveyard scene featuring Xavier (James McAvoy), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Scott/Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

That tells us two things: first is that X-Men: Dark Phoenix will definitely include a big death, and second, it’ll probably involve either Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and/or Magneto (Michael Fassbender). And though the fans certainly have their guesses on who it might be, sources close to We Got This Covered have now confirmed which character will die and how it goes down (spoilers to follow).

Much to the surprise of no one, it’s Mystique who won’t make it out of the film alive and apparently, it’s Jean Grey who kills her. From what we’ve been told, once Jean’s powers begin to take over, she tries to go her own way, but the other mutants are reluctant to let her. They try to convince their friend to come back to the school so that they can help, but she gets angry and attacks them, accidentally killing Jennifer Lawrence’s character in the process by using a bit too much force.

How things play out from there, we can’t say, but that’s what we’ve been told and it certainly makes sense. After all, Lawrence has long made it clear that she’s had enough of the franchise and wants out, while Dark Phoenix will also very likely be the last we see of Charles Xavier and his peers before the X-Men are rebooted as part of the MCU.

That’s definitely the right direction to head in with the property, too, as in the wake of Apocalypse, most people are beginning to feel like the mutants are overdue for the fresh start that Disney likely has in mind. Let’s just hope that X-Men: Dark Phoenix can send them off on a high note before the reset button’s hit.
