Easily one of the most anticipated films of 2014, the first X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer is now online. Featuring two generations of X-Men, the film brings together actors from the original trilogy with members of the cast from 2011’s prequel, X-Men: First Class. Speaking of the original trilogy, director Bryan Singer is back as well, taking over directing duties from Matthew Vaughn, who helmed the series’ last outing.
Initial impressions? Well, one would think that considering Singer’s high level of activity on social media, posting pictures from the set on Instagram and Twitter, that there wouldn’t be many surprises to be had with this trailer. On the contrary though, there’s a lot in here that I think even those paying close attention to the production haven’t seen yet, unless you were at Comic-Con, of course.
For those unfamiliar with the film, here’s a rundown of the plot. In the future, Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen), along with the surviving X-Men, come together to send Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back in time to prevent their horrible future from coming true. Wolverine goes back to the 1970s to convince a young Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) to put aside their differences and work for the benefit of all mankind.
Now, comic fans know that Singer and Co. changed the story slightly, as in the comic book version it’s Kitty Pryde that goes back in time to stop a future filled with mutant-hunting Sentinel robots. Naturally, Wolverine gets the duty in the new movie, but don’t worry, Pryde’s still here, played as she was in X-Men: Last Stand by Ellen Page. Also in the trailer we get first looks at new characters like Bishop (Omar Sy), Blink (Bingbing Fan), and the supposed bad guy of the affair, Bolliver Trask (Peter Dinklage). Also, be sure to keep a eye open for new looks for Storm (Halle Berry) and Ice Man (Shawn Ashmore).
Between this and last week’s release of the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer, I’m not sure which Marvel movie I’m more excited for next year. I may have to give The Winter Soldier the edge though because there will unlikely be a Days of Future Past Team America remix.
