Writer/producer Simon Kinberg recently spoke out about the sequel to X-Men: First Class, sharing ideas that the team has for the film. Now that director Matthew Vaughn is on board to direct, pre-production isn’t too far off and ideas are starting to take shape.
Speaking to MTV, Kinberg said that the sequel will be Magneto-centric.
“That’s what was so cool about the first one and what we want to continue. Magneto becomes the villain ultimately of the franchise but he’s a much more complicated character as a young man. He’s someone you sympathize with, you care about you root for even though might not necessarily agree with his methods, you understand his philosophy.
We’re still figuring that out. I think the truth is ultimately that because Michael [Fassbender] is such an interesting actor, he’ll never be full-on anything. He’ll have a villainous side and he’ll have a sympathetic human side you’ll be able to relate but you’ll also be afraid of him. He becomes Magneto, he says ‘Call me Magneto’ at the end of the first movie.”
If in fact this is the direction that the sequel wants to go in, I’m perfectly fine with that. The only thing is, previous reports said that the sequel would focus on Professor X. So which one is it? Who will take the spotlight in the sequel, Magneto or Professor X?
Personally, I’d rather it be Magneto, simply because Michael Fassbender is such a great actor and his portrayal of Magneto was fantastic in the first film. He exuded danger and ruthlessness, turning Magneto into a truly scary villain.
So, like I said, if the second film will be Magneto-centric then count me in!
