With the highly publicized fiasco that was Justice League‘s production well behind us, I think it’s safe to say we’ve all been waiting to hear exactly what Zack Snyder’s next movie will be. Well, this may come as a shock to some, but it’s not something to be released under the umbrella of Warner Bros. Rather, Army of the Dead will debut on the Netflix streaming service once it’s ready.
As you’ve no doubt surmised, this picture will be a “zombie horror thriller,” a prospect that actually excites me because I quite enjoyed Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. That said, those in agreement with me are probably jazzed to see him return to the genre.
Right now, we can tell you that Snyder will direct a story crafted by himself, which was adapted to screenplay by Joby Harold. When it comes to the plot, The Hollywood Reporter says, “The adventure is set amid a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, during which a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.”
It should also be noted that filming is set to commence this summer with a budget said to be around $90 million, so this’ll be one hell of a zombie extravaganza once completed. In fact, Snyder said, “There are no handcuffs on me at all with this one,” causing me to wonder if that’d been a thinly veiled jab at a certain studio known for their interference. Or he’s just pumped up for this production.
Either way, he’s quite obviously unable to contain his excitement, also telling THR the following:
“I love to honor canon and the works of art, but this is the opportunity to find a purely joyful way to express myself though a genre. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware — but not in a wink-to-the-camera way — balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose [like this].
“I love big action, I love big sequences. My movie brain starts clicking around and I was like, ‘We need to be shooting this now!’ Constructing these sequences really fired me up.”
At the moment, Army of the Dead lacks a release date, but we’ll keep you posted once more info on the movie from Snyder’s newly rebranded Stone Quarry production company surfaces.
