Zack Snyder Plans To Explore Doomsday Lore With Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice And Beyond

To say that much digital ink has been spilled about Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice would perhaps be the biggest understatement in this new generation of comic book movies. The very moment the by-now famous logo light up Hall H of San Diego Comic-Con, rumors and speculation have only continued to mount - and mount and mount - as we collectively inched closer to its March debut and now, little more than two months until its arrival, we're almost at the moment when Zack Snyder's Herculean comic showdown lights up the silver screen.

To say that much digital ink has been spilled about Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice would perhaps be the biggest understatement in this new generation of comic book movies. The very moment the by-now famous logo light up Hall H of San Diego Comic-Con, rumors and speculation have only continued to mount – and mount and mount – as we collectively inched closer to its March debut and now, little more than two months until its arrival, we’re almost at the moment when Zack Snyder’s Herculean comic showdown lights up the silver screen.

We’ve seen teases of the final feature already, with ardent fans breaking down each and every frame. Although, some have claimed that the most recent trailer gave away too much by showcasing the hulking Doomsday, but Snyder himself had a thing or two to share about his abomination with The Daily Beast.

According to the man behind the lens, Dawn of Justice will delve deep into the mythology behind Lex Luthor’s towering killing machine, which we assume is birthed from his Frankenstein-esque experiments with the body of General Zod. But in the interview, Snyder hinted at plans beyond Batman V Superman, which will naturally build toward the two-part Justice League film across 2017 and 2019.

“I know what’s in the movie, so I know there’s other stuff,” Snyder laughed. “We had a long conversation about just taking ownership of that, of giving it to the audience in a controlled way that I felt was consistent with the escalation of the campaign.”

“Well, you have Doomsday, right? He doesn’t just crawl out of the ground. He has his own mythology, right? So that has to be explored. To us it really made sense to give [Doomsday] to the audience now. I really wanted to make the audience a promise that… though I’m super excited and happy and fulfilled by the conflict of Batman and Superman, there’s also a bigger world to start to think about.”

Later in the piece, the director driving Warner’s budding DC Expanded Universe also stressed that both he and his creative team are building a universe with these beloved characters, meaning that there will be some misdirects and red herrings scattered across trailers to ensure the reveals remain special.

“It is constantly evolving, but we’re starting to get a handle on where we’re going with the world,” he said. “That’s fun because it allows us now to be driving toward a goal that we don’t have to make up as much. The rules can be the rules, and the movie can exist in a closed universe… it allows us to tie things together. If there’s a movie over here doing this, and we’re over here doing this, now we’re all on the same page.

“It allows for a coherent universe, which is important,” he added. “I think that makes the experience a little more satisfying because we know where we’re going, so the misdirects can be stronger and the reveals can be bigger.”

But is Snyder referring to a specific misdirect with Doomsday? Or simply the overarching DC universe in general? All will be revealed – and more questions raised – when Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25, 2016.
