Long before Justice League fell flat at the global box office, Zack Snyder delivered Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, a cinematic feast that brought together three of the biggest names in comic book history.
We are, of course, referring to Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent – played by Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, respectively – while Dawn of Justice also served as a springboard for Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) ahead of her own standalone Wonder Woman movie.
And though some felt that the Immortal Warrior threatened to steal the show from her superpowered allies, Batman V Superman was really all about its titular duo and their historic feud, one which played out on the biggest scale imaginable. But it’s also a movie that contained tons of easter eggs, and even now, we’re still learning of new ones.
Case in point: take a look at the photo below and see if you spot anything out of the ordinary.
As you may or may not have noticed, there are three, clearly visible crosses in this scene, which is taken from the moment when the Man of Steel defeats Doomsday by sacrificing himself. While most fans probably assumed that they meant nothing, one individual hopped on Vero to inquire about if they held any significance and sure enough, Zack Snyder answered, saying: That’s a reference to Justice League 2 #untilitwasnt.
Of course, the director wouldn’t give anymore clues or insight, but learning that he was planting seeds for a Justice League sequel all the way back in Batman V Superman is pretty interesting. Clearly, he was developing some kind of narrative arc for the franchise which would have been revealed later on, and while a few fans think the crosses foreshadow the deaths of two more heroes, we’ll probably never find out for sure.
Still, it’s great to see that even so long after its release, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is still coming up in conversation and yielding surprising new finds like this. There was a lot in the film for fans to dissect and discover, and it seems that all of its secrets have yet to be revealed.
