Zombieland 2 Release Date Announced, First Plot Synopsis Revealed

Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t already shot Zombieland 2, despite a report to the contrary last month. However, the idea of a follow-up to the moderately successful post-apocalyptic comedy - which had been intermittently convulsing this year - did manifest into something tangible last week when The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that said sequel would be moving forward, with the original cast, no less.

Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t already shot Zombieland 2, despite a report to the contrary last month. However, the idea of a follow-up to the moderately successful post-apocalyptic comedy – which had been intermittently convulsing this year – did manifest into something tangible last week when The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that said sequel would be moving forward, with the original cast, no less.

That’s right, after co-screenwriter Paul Wernick teased the living bejesus out of the Pacific Playland faithful, and the other scribe, Rhett Reese, acknowledged an inescapable time jump, we finally received corroboration that Zombieland 2 is officially a go, and the likes of Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) will all be returning to the land of the undead. And now, we know exactly when.

Set to begin production in January of next year – with Ruben Fleischer back at the helm – the hugely anticipated sequel will arrive on October 11th, 2019. Funnily enough, that release date is nearly an exact decade removed from the debut of Zombieland, which opened on October 2nd, 2009. I mean, we couldn’t have asked for a better anniversary present.

To go along with the confirmed release date, we’ve also got the official synopsis, which you can read below:

“Through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, the Zombie slayers must face off against many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.”

Having earned a little over $100 million globally on a production budget of nearly $25 million, Zombieland didn’t have the ticket booth as lively as Sony would’ve hoped, but the feature was well-received critically, seeing as it currently sits at 90% on the Tomatometer and has gathered quite the cult following. Therefore, the ten year window between the original and the sequel is understandable and should be well worth the wait.
