When Bonnie McKee isn’t busy writing hits for other artists, she’s hitting the studio and crafting her own. Responsible for writing songs like Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream,” McKee takes a similar pop route with her solo material. Though she hasn’t released an actual album in over ten years, she dropped an EP last year and made noise with the single “American Girl.” Her new song, “Stud Muffin,” is a pitch perfect bop – but it’s just a little bit unconventional.
“Stud Muffin” doesn’t try to hide the fact that it’s a full on promotion for Quest Nutrition’s newest blueberry muffin protein bar flavor. The song includes lyrics that name drop Quest bars, the music video features Quest bars, and the clip is even hosted on Quest’s YouTube page. It’s all so unbelievably corny, but something about how campy it is just adds to its brilliance, because under the surface, “Stud Muffin” is actually a really solid track. Despite the odd pairing, this isn’t the first time a pop artist has made a jingle for a big company: Owl City created a sugary sweet song for Oreo in 2013.
After hearing “Stud Muffin,” there’s no question that jingles are definitely one of Bonnie McKee’s strong suits, but hopefully she’ll be able to channel that wonderful pop cheese into some non-protein bar related songs in the future.
