You couldn’t tell by Mars’ “24k Magic” performance that it was his first time ever playing it live – he commanded the stage like he’s known to, bringing a new life to the song that couldn’t be found in its studio version. Featuring a dance party as he walked in and a giant gold “XXIV” backdrop, Mars proved exactly why the infectious song is making a top ten debut after its first week. The fun didn’t stop there though: Mars debuted another song from his new album, “Chunky,” and it follows a similar formula that the lead single does with its retro feel and high-octane pop sound.

Both songs are going to be on Mars’ upcoming album, 24k Magic, out on November 18th. Perhaps the most disappointing part about his SNL performance was that he didn’t take any cues from The Weeknd when it involved the lead-up to the show. Considering The Weeknd streamed “False Alarm” a few days before he played it live, you would have thought that maybe Bruno Mars would have done the same with “Chunky.” We’ll have to wait a little bit longer though till we hear another album track – but leaving the first single on repeat will suffice in the meantime.
