It’s hard to tell whether a highly anticipated release will be worth the hype surrounding it, but I’ll go on the record and declare that Disclosure have exceeded my expectations with “Omen.”
The duo announcing that they would team up with UK superstar Sam Smith for the first time since their 2013 pop crossover mega-hit “Latch” turned so many heads that I had to write about it twice, but this song gets it right in so many ways that I’d be willing to cover a remix series or two as well just for more opportunities to sing its praises.
In addition, the brothers’ seductive synth work and Smith’s soulful verses have been accompanied by an engaging music video depicting an unlawful gathering taking place in a dystopian setting. Heavily modded-out partygoers make for attention-grabbing imagery, and Smith himself boasts a great deal of on-camera time as well. The video ends with a caption that reads “TO BE CONTINUED,” teasing at more videos that will complete a greater concept series.
The album art for the brothers’ upcoming album, Caracal, makes a cameo in the video as well – and seeing as how the album drops in a month, it comes as no surprise that they would want to keep people talking about it. While they had us worried with some of their recent releases, I personally find “Omen” to be a far stronger track than “Latch,” and hope that the rest of their fanbase shares the sentiment.
