An alleged first-person account of abusive behavior has resurfaced on Reddit this week and garnering a lot of traction on social media, which involves a young woman’s discovery that her spying stepfather had hidden a recording device aimed into her bedroom after urging her to invite her boyfriend over.
Writing that she was 21 at the time, the woman said she stayed home to house-sit and feed the family’s animals while her mother, stepfather, and two younger brothers left for a camping trip. Before heading out, her 36-year-old stepfather mounted what he described as a security camera outside her window to watch the backyard. She initially accepted this because he had recently added other exterior cameras.
The OP’s life changed when she took the stepdad’s advice and invited her boyfriend over. One thing led to another and the two, as per the Redditor’s account, found that the device feeding into her room didn’t have ordinary security wiring. Investigating further, it turned out to be a secret camera, angled directly at her room – a place where she also comfortably changed her clothes. The unit held an SD card, with the footage streaming to her stepfather’s phone.
One detail that didn’t sit right with her from the get-go was the change in her step-father’s stance. She said he’d specifically encouraged her to have her boyfriend stay over while the family was away. This was a reversal of his usual stance, since he had previously refused to let the boyfriend visit when the house was empty. In a later update, the original poster, with the username of u/katiedababie, revealed that he’d filmed the two of them being intimate with each other.
It’s worth highlighting that secretly recording someone in a private space such as a bedroom is illegal in most U.S. jurisdictions (per Recording Law), regardless of who owns the home. Depending on the state, this could be a serious offense that can trigger criminal penalties and, in some cases, mandatory sex-offender registration.
They pressured her not to pursue charges
The woman said she initially collected the device and its SD card, filed a police report, and consulted relatives, including a cousin who works as a civil lawyer. She planned to tell her mother in a neutral location, away from her stepfather and with her aunt present. That plan didn’t quite pan out as she explained in another June 22, 2023 update, since the stepdad reached her mother first and convinced her to side with him.
In the most recent update dated December 27, 2025, the OP said she ultimately decided to let it go because her mother threatened with holding her college fund and pressured her not to press charges. She said she ignored her for roughly a week at the height of the crisis — and said most of her family continues to accept her abusive stepfather.
