‘A good man, a loving father’: Heartbreak as second victim dies in ‘senseless and tragic’ ICE sniper attack

A second person shot at the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas, Texas, has died, according to the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), which is representing his family. Miguel Ángel García-Hernández, 32, “succumbed to his injuries after being removed from life support,” following the sniper attack on September 24, LULAC announced in a news release. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to hear this news, as his death leaves behind a shattered family.

García-Hernández, who was from Mexico, was one of three people shot at the ICE facility during the targeted assault. His wife, Stephany Gauffeny, said her husband was “a good man, a loving father and the provider for our family”.

She also added that they had “just bought our first home together, and he worked hard every single day to make sure our children had what they needed”. His death is being called a “senseless tragedy”. I can’t imagine what his family is going through, as he leaves behind four young children and his wife, who is expecting their fifth child. Gauffeny also told NPR that her husband worked as a house painter before he was detained.

The ICE facility shooter fatalities increase as another immigrant dies from wounds

The shooting tragically left one detainee dead on the day of the attack, with two others critically wounded. ICE officials identified the other slain victim as Norlan Guzman-Fuentes, 37, of El Salvador. ICE released a statement saying that Guzman-Fuentes suffered a “senseless and tragic fatal gunshot wound” during the assault on the Dallas field office.

The third victim, Jose Andres Bordones-Molina, has reportedly been released from the hospital, according to a Department of Homeland Security official. To be fair, this is a bit of good news in a terrible situation, but they had to deal with the terrible conditions that ICE puts immigrants in.

Authorities have identified the gunman as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, who was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Thankfully, no law enforcement officers were injured in the attack. Texas officials have described the shooting as a “targeted attack” on ICE, and they believe the suspect acted alone. This wasn’t some spur-of-the-moment thing, as officials believe the shooting came after a “high degree of planning”.

Investigators recovered an “anti-Ice” shell casing at the scene, along with handwritten notes at the suspect’s residence outlining a “game plan” for the attack and to “target areas at the facility”. The notes even had the suspect calling the ICE employees “people showing up to collect a dirty paycheck”. The FBI is now investigating the shooting as an act of targeted violence. This is weird since the shooter seemed to be targeting the immigrants in the facility, but maybe he was a bad shot.
