Ever since his scene-stealing turn as Bumper Allen in the a capella comedy Pitch Perfect, Workaholics actor Adam DeVine has been highly in demand. He was in the running to play John Belushi in a biopic (though that part went to Emile Hirsch), recently appeared in a multi-episode arc on ABC sitcom Modern Family and will star in Sony’s horror comedy The Final Girls alongside other hot young stars like Thomas Middleditch, Nina Dobrev and Alexander Ludwig. Now, DeVine has found his highest-profile project yet, with news that he has just signed on for a supporting role opposite Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in Warner Bros.’ The Intern.
DeVine will play the smarmy head of the interns in the comedy, which centers on a “seventysomething widower (De Niro) who enters an intern program and is assigned to the founder of a successful fashion website (Hathaway).” De Niro has been attached to the project for a long time, but Hathaway replaced Reese Witherspoon in the role of the fashion guru in February.
The Intern – not to be confused with the Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson comedy The Internship – will be directed by Nancy Meyers, the acclaimed helmer behind The Parent Trap, What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and It’s Complicated. Few directors can claim to have as steady a string of comedy hits as Meyers, and with its great cast, The Intern is shaping up to be another one.
DeVine will film his part for The Intern before heading back to roll cameras on the second season of his Comedy Central show Adam DeVine’s House Party. After that show wraps up, he’ll head off to shoot the fifth season of Workaholics next year. DeVine has huge comedic chops, so it’s great that Hollywood finally starting to notice him. The Intern is sure to be the first of many big studio gigs for the star.
The Intern will open on September 25th, 2015.
