Airbnb host befuddled after finding out guests left her home covered in candle wax and stains: ‘What were they doing?’

A TikTok user identified as @donatella_westaway recently shared a video detailing her frustrating experience with a guest who left her Airbnb in a state of chaos, the Daily Dot reports. The footage, which has since gained significant traction with 2.5 million views and 242,800 likes, shows the creator and a man working hard to clean their apartment after a ten-day stay went completely off the rails.

The host noted that this was her first truly bad experience in three years of hosting. While she initially thought the guests had only moved a few small pieces of furniture, she soon realized the extent of the disarray.

Everything from the plates to the larger furniture had been shifted around, which really complicates the cleaning process. She explained, “I already had an issue with the big furniture that they moved. But then they also moved things like plates,” before pointing out that putting the whole kitchen back together was a massive task.

The damage went beyond just moving items around

The host panned the camera to a sofa covered in pen marks and stains, leaving her to ask, “What were they doing?” Even more concerning was the presence of candle wax scattered everywhere, including on a wooden table. The host speculated that the guests might have been performing some kind of ritual involving throwing candles around the house.

The situation was not just about the mess, as the guests caused issues throughout their stay. Although they initially praised the house upon checking in, things changed after a day and a half when a loud domestic argument broke out. The guests also hosted friends and played loud music until 1:00 AM, forcing the hosts to send a reminder about the house rules regarding noise between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM. To top it all off, the guests refused to leave for an hour after their official checkout time.

The host admitted that this behavior was incredibly irritating, though she managed to get the apartment cleaned just in time for the next guest. She expressed that she was not even worried about getting paid for the damages, stating, “I don’t even care if they are going to pay for the damages; I just want these people off Airbnb.” It is a sentiment many hosts can probably relate to when dealing with guests who do not respect the property.

The video sparked a lot of conversation in the comments section. One person shared their own approach to staying in rentals, writing, “When I stay in an airbnb you can barely tell I was there.” Another user suggested that hosts should remove items like canisters for tea, coffee, and sugar because “you cant trust anyone not to be contaminating them.”
