With the ongoing situation regarding Jonathan Majors and his alleged domestic abuse of various partners, it’s no surprise his influence on Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is being minimized, despite his incredibly important and influential role in the film. Majors played Kang the Conqueror, the major villain in the film, so it’s hard to ignore the fact he has a lot of screen time, but Disney Plus seems to be trying its hardest to do so. Now, it appears they’ve even taken the entire character of Kang out of the synopsis, and therefore Majors, too.
Instead of mentioning the intergalactic villain, the text of the synopsis for the new Ant-Man film reads:
“Super Hero partners Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Together, with Hope’s parents Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, and Scott’s daughter Cassie, the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible”
This clever bit of language manipulation is still pretty enticing (despite some poor reviews), but it is very obvious what Marvel and Disney have done, especially to anybody who’s watched the film. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania follows Scott Lang (Ant-Man) as he tries to repair his relationship with his teenage daughter Cassie, who’s become active in political movements to help those displaced by the Blip. However, in a strange twist of fate, Scott, his daughter, his partner (Hope, also known as The Wasp), and Hope’s parents get sucked into the Quantum Realm, where they come under attack by Kang’s forces.
There are then several important scenes with Majors as Kang, where he reveals his motivations and how he came to power, all of which are vital to the plot of the film. In the climax of the movie, Kang even attacks Ant-Man, before the villain is subdued. A mid-credits scene then sees a number of variants of Kang mourning his passing, with a post-credits scene then seeing Loki and Mobius M. Mobius running into another Kang variant. So, he’s not exactly a bit-part player in the film.
If the streaming giant has indeed tried to edit history this way, the fact remains that Majors is an integral part of the film. With that said, there is also the question of whether or not his character was mentioned in the synopsis in the first place, with many pointing out that might not have been the case. For now, though, it’s clear the company is distancing itself from him, and that’s something we can be sure of.
