Virginia woman allegedly lights up cigarette while driving. Then a ‘violent boom’ rocks the neighborhood

A Fairfax County, Virginia, resident described a sudden morning explosion that shook her home “hard enough to make my heart stop,” after what officials say was a propane-related vehicle blast, with early reports alleging the driver may have been smoking at the time of the incident.

The account, shared by Shannon Marie in response to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department on social media, captured the moment a routine morning commute gave way to panic, sirens, and a neighborhood-wide shockwave.

Marie wrote that around 7:30 a.m. on April 9, her home was jolted by a “violent boom” that rattled walls and triggered frantic barking from her dog.

She initially feared a structural issue or fallen debris, running outside to inspect her yard and roofline for damage. Finding none, she and a neighbor began exchanging messages and calls, both trying to make sense of the unexplained blast that seemed to have no immediate source of the sound.

Within minutes, emergency sirens began converging on a nearby major roadway. Marie noted that her child’s school bus had passed through the same area shortly before the explosion, heightening her anxiety as she attempted to confirm her daughter’s safety.

She briefly contacted her child via FaceTime and confirmed she was unharmed and safe on the bus, a moment she described as emotionally overwhelming after seconds of uncertainty.

The blast is under investigation

According to reports circulating alongside initial emergency information, the incident involved a single vehicle and a propane tank, and the driver was allegedly seen lighting a cigarette shortly before the explosion occurred. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the role of smoking in the ignition sequence, and investigators have not released a final determination on the cause.

Fire and rescue officials from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded quickly to the scene, where crews found evidence of an explosion involving a vehicle and a propane tank less than a mile from the residential neighborhood.

Authorities confirmed the blast was strong enough to be felt across multiple nearby homes, prompting residents to report shaking walls, loud concussive noise, and immediate concern for a possible structural or utility failure.

The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office assisted in securing the area while fire officials and investigators assessed potential hazards and began documenting the crash site. Emergency crews temporarily restricted access to the intersection as they worked to ensure there were no additional ignition risks or secondary leaks from fuel sources.

The driver suffered ‘non-life-threatening’ injuries
