A transmission expert from Texas is urging car owners not to skip routine transmission service, warning that cutting corners now can lead to massive repair bills down the road. The specialist, who works at Integrity Transmission and Auto Repair in Fate, Texas, says many drivers underestimate just how important regular transmission maintenance really is.
In his TikTok video, spending around $600 on a proper transmission service is a smart investment compared to the thousands of dollars it can cost to replace a failing transmission. He recently serviced his wife’s uncle’s truck and charged him $600. According to Motor1, the uncle felt the cost was excessive and argued that many people simply avoid transmission service altogether because of how expensive it seems.
He asked his uncle about oil changes and learned the truck gets serviced every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. Then he pointed out an important fact about transmission fluid. “So here’s the point guys,” he concludes. “You pay for it all at once. But when you look at the amount of miles you get between services, it is a whole lot cheaper than buying a new transmission.” “If you don’t want to service your transmission, I guess that’s on you. I tried to help you out,” he says.
The math actually makes transmission service a bargain
Transmission fluid only needs changing every 50,000 miles. If you change your oil every 5,000 miles, that’s 10 oil changes in the same period. The cost of those oil changes adds up to about the same as one transmission service. You’re just paying for it all at once instead of spreading it out.
The specialist warned that skipping transmission service will cost much more in the end. A new transmission costs thousands of dollars to replace. Spending $600 every 50,000 miles prevents that expensive repair. Just like how rental car mix-ups can lead to unexpected problems, some automotive issues seem minor until you understand the full consequences.
Some people in the comments said $600 is too high. One person from California said their shop only charges $240. Another car owner said they did it themselves for just $50 in fluid costs on their Cadillac. But experts agree the service itself is necessary.
Other mechanics support this advice. One shop explained that “lifetime” transmission fluid is a myth. The fluid might last the car’s lifetime, but skipping changes makes that lifetime much shorter. Honda dealerships recommend changing transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles to prevent damage. However, when basic oil changes go wrong, repairs can snowball into much bigger issues.
