A Kansas woman says an encounter with a driver who mistakenly entered a pedestrian and bike lane took an unexpected turn after the vehicle became trapped with no easy way out. The moment, which she shared on TikTok, has sparked discussion about how both drivers and pedestrians should respond when traffic mistakes happen.
In a TikTok video posted by Ashleigh Toinette (@ashleigh.toinette), she claims a driver entered a lane designated for people walking and riding bicycles. According to Toinette, the driver then became confrontational with people using the path instead of acknowledging the mistake.
“So these people don’t realize that they are on a walking and bike lane,” Toinette says in the video. She then claims the occupants were “being rude” toward pedestrians and cyclists navigating the restricted lane.
The video shows a vehicle stopped on the pathway near a fixed pole positioned in the middle of the lane. Toinette points out that the barrier appeared to prevent the driver from simply continuing forward.
“They can’t even get out,” she says, before adding, “It’s really funny. Must be suck, must suck for them. Really must suck.”
The car seemingly got trapped
As the recording continues, the driver appears to attempt to leave the pedestrian lane by steering into a nearby traffic lane. Toinette reacts by saying, “They’re gonna hit somebody else’s car. Wow, really intelligent. Really intelligent.”
The clip does not identify where in Kansas the incident occurred, and Toinette does not provide additional details about what led the driver onto the pedestrian path.
The post generated discussion in the comments, with some viewers focusing on the driver’s alleged behavior rather than the apparent navigation mistake itself. One commenter wrote, “girl you’re so in the right. mind you if they had just made a silly mistake and drove in the bike lane, if they had politely asked you guys to move over for them to pass it would have went a different route for them. You were just giving them their energy back.”
Mistaken turns into bike lanes, pedestrian plazas and other restricted areas occasionally occur, particularly in areas where roadway layouts change or barriers separate vehicle traffic from shared-use paths. Transportation agencies generally advise motorists who enter restricted areas by mistake to proceed cautiously, avoid endangering pedestrians and follow local traffic rules while exiting the area when it is safe to do so.
The video itself captures only part of the encounter, and it does not establish what happened before or after the recording. The video also does not show whether any collision occurred or whether authorities responded. Opinions expressed are Toinette’s and the commenters’ and have not been independently verified.
