When a Sherman Oaks, California, mother of three heard screams over the phone with her children’s grandmother, she rushed home and took matters into her own hands to stop a burglary in progress.
According to family accounts shared with KTLA, the mother of three had only stepped out briefly to get coffee, leaving her children with her mother. She has not been identified in the press, and her husband has only identified himself as “David.”
While she was away, reports say she spoke on the phone with her children’s grandmother and suddenly heard frantic screaming. “All of a sudden, her mom started screaming, ‘Help, help, help,’” her husband, David, told reporters.
The suspects, he said, jumped the front gate and went to the back of the home to try to break in through the sliding glass door. But when they came face to face with David’s mother-in-law, David said, “They ran away.”
The Mercedes G-Wagon collision
In the meantime, the surveillance video, which has now gone viral on social media, shows a black Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon driven by David’s wife barreling down their residential street before slamming into a white sedan that authorities believe the alleged burglars planned to use to flee the attempted break-in.
Two figures are seen near the family’s front yard, and within seconds, the SUV enters the frame at high speeds, making a forceful impact on the suspects’ vehicle in the front yard. Simultaneously, several individuals run off on foot.
The G-Wagon “could have kept driving”
As the footage went viral online, one social media comment noted, “Nice looks like the G wagon could have kept driving.” On that note, one said, “GDub wagon for the W!”
Another added, “Ain’t gonna lie, I’d have had a hard time doing that in my 63 or Z06, but I’d have blasted my 6000lbs turbo Cayenne right into their sorry a—!”
But one commenter noted how scary the situation must have been. “That must have been terrifying. She acted instinctively to protect her children, and thankfully no one was hurt. Home safety is a serious issue,” the comment said.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the scene after the crash. According to the family, LAPD found evidence in the suspects’ vehicle linked to the attempted burglary, including a wallet with a driver’s license, a red crowbar, and a walkie-talkie tuned to LAPD’s scanner frequency.
Police are actively investigating the case as detectives interview neighbors, review security footage, and work to identify and locate those seen fleeing on foot.
