A man visited a Toyota dealership ready to buy a car, but the salesman used a common trick that made him angry enough to walk out and take his business somewhere else. The customer, known as @bluejelloface on TikTok, shared his frustrating experience in a video that has been viewed more than 27,000 times. His story shows how dealerships sometimes use psychological tricks to pressure buyers.
According to Motor1, the trouble started after he test drove a Camry on Friday and asked the salesman to prepare the pricing details. He said he would come back on Saturday around 10 a.m. to continue the discussion.
Later that Friday night, the salesman called him with an unusual request. He said the sales manager wanted to talk at 11 a.m. the next day. When asked why, the salesman said they wanted to tell him they weren’t making any money on the car.
The salesman’s manipulation attempt was obvious from the start
The customer was shocked by this statement. He hadn’t even started negotiating the price yet, so the claim seemed pointless and manipulative. Despite being angry, he decided to show up on Saturday anyway.
“So I pause him, and I’m like, ‘That’s none of my business. I didn’t set the cost of that. We haven’t even talked or negotiated about price. I haven’t even asked you to take any money off of the car,’” he said in his TikTok video.
The salesman arrived five minutes late and immediately started explaining why the dealership wasn’t making money on the car. The customer stopped him and said it wasn’t his problem since he hadn’t set the price or asked for any discounts yet. While many mechanics praise Toyota’s reliability and value over luxury brands, this dealership’s sales tactics told a different story.
The manager then switched to talking about the trade-in value. He said they couldn’t offer more money for the trade-in because they weren’t making profit on the car itself. The customer mentioned he had been getting his car serviced at that dealership for six years.
The salesman responded by saying he didn’t care about that because the sales and service departments are separate. He added that he was only interested in selling more cars quickly. This response made the customer extremely angry, and he walked out immediately. The salesman didn’t try to stop him.
This isn’t the first time a Camry buyer faced dishonesty at dealerships, showing a pattern of questionable practices. The customer ended up buying a car at a different dealership where the salesman treated him much better. He said the experience was so good that he might even try to hire that salesman for his own team.
According to Consumer Reports, this type of tactic is common at dealerships. They claim they’re selling at cost to make customers feel guilty about negotiating. Other common tricks include lowball offers, false urgency claims, and confusing payment structures.
People who saw the video agreed with the customer’s frustration. “That is why new car dealerships (franchise dealers) have such bad reps and us independent guys have to work so hard to prove ourselves…. “Avalon TRD” 😂😂😂. I wish the best for you and yours,” one person said.
Another said they hate car sales manipulation tactics, while another with 20 years of experience in the car business tried to explain that the salesman was just trying to say they had marked down vehicles and couldn’t negotiate further.
