Stranger confronts Black man helping his daughter practice for her driving test. Then the argument takes a racial turn

A video showing a tense standoff outside a California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office has sparked a heated debate online about public road safety, race, and the idea of “white privilege.”

Kevin Blue (@kevinblue345) shared the footage on X on Sept. 16, showing a heated confrontation between himself and a white man in Fremont. The video has since gone viral.

The clip has picked up more than 220,000 views and shows Blue’s daughter practicing for her upcoming driving test. According to Blue, he had taken his daughter to an area directly next to the Fremont DMV office so she could practice. The idea was for her to get familiar with the actual routes used by state examiners during driving tests, which is a common way for new drivers to prepare.

The heated confrontation ended with a “white privilege” accusation

But the driving lesson took a turn when an older white man approached their car. Blue said the man walked up to the vehicle and started yelling at his daughter through the window. Worried about his daughter, Blue got out of the car to intervene, and the situation quickly turned into a face-to-face argument.

The video shared by Blue starts in the middle of the argument, with the two men standing off on the side of the road. Blue can be heard repeatedly telling the man to “get away from my car,” while the man continues criticizing the family for being there.

The man insisted that Blue was “not teaching her good” and told him to take the practice session to a different neighborhood.

“I asked you to practice somewhere else,” the man can be heard saying before moving closer to Blue and shouting in his face.

Blue warned him to back away, but the man refused to move. Blue pointed out that they were on a public street and had every right to be there. He also accused the man of using “white privilege” to police them.

The man denied this and accused Blue of being racist. Blue maintained that the man had targeted them because of their race and told him to leave. The man, meanwhile, questioned why they were practicing in a neighborhood where they didn’t know anyone.

Learner’s permit holders are legally allowed to practice driving on public roads as long as they have adult supervision. California also requires 50 hours of practice before a driving test, so practicing on roads around an actual DMV testing area is not unusual.

The response to the video is mixed

The reaction online has been split. One user wrote, “You showed great restraint. I can handle him talking to me but the minute he would have addressed my child in front of me, I would have snapped and probably ended up in Santa Rita that evening!”

Another rebutted, “Why didn’t it start at the beginning? Did he ASK? Did you ask him why he was asking? You brought up the race first and if you were that bothered you had the option of getting in your car and going somewhere else. I don’t think either of you were in the right.”

And that’s probably the biggest thing to keep in mind when watching a viral clip like this. The video starts after the argument has already begun, meaning viewers are only getting part of what happened and largely have to rely on the perspectives of the people involved.
