Woman down $200 after her ‘car lip’ falls off — and no, we didn’t know cars have ‘lips’ either

We've heard of a curb whisker but this is ridiculous.

A TikTok creator is going viral after discovering that a small — but apparently expensive — piece of her car disappeared somewhere on the highway.

Liz, who shares automotive content on TikTok under the handle @liz_10116, posted a short video documenting the moment she realized the front lip on her car had completely fallen off while she was driving. Viewers reacted not only to the mishap but also to the unfamiliar term “car lip.”

Liz’s video overlay reads, “Not me losing my whole lip on my like it wasn’t $200,” referencing the approximate cost of the missing part.

“Guys, my f—ing lip fell off on the highway. I don’t have a lip on my car anymore. No. Oh, my god. I don’t even know how,” she says in the video.

According to Liz, the realization came shortly after she and a passenger heard something unusual while driving. “We literally heard something. We heard something, and I was like, ‘Oh, my god. Imagine it was my lip,’ and we’re just laughing about it.” Liz exited the vehicle, though, and found out, “My car literally does not have a lip. Look. Oh, my god.”

Meanwhile, the clip shows the front of her Honda Civic missing the narrow trim piece that normally sits along the bottom edge of the bumper.

“WTF is a lip on a car?”

The comments section quickly filled with confusion from viewers unfamiliar with the term. One person wrote, “WTF is a lip on a car? I’ve never heard that before!!🤔😏.” Another viewer said, “Am so happy I know what a car lip is.” A third attempted to clarify the terminology, commenting, “It’s called a front spoiler….”

Although “car lip” is widely used slang among car enthusiasts, the component is more formally known as a front lip spoiler or front bumper lip. The part is a narrow extension that attaches to the bottom of a vehicle’s front bumper. These accessories are commonly made from plastic, polyurethane, or carbon fiber and sit close to the ground.

The purpose of a front lip is partly aesthetic and partly functional. Many drivers install them to give a vehicle a sportier or more aggressive appearance, particularly on popular tuner cars like the Honda Civic. In some cases, the piece can also slightly improve aerodynamics by directing airflow and reducing lift at the front of the car at higher speeds.

Because the component sits low to the ground, it’s also vulnerable to damage. Road debris, steep driveways, curbs, or loose mounting hardware can cause a lip spoiler to crack, scrape, or, in some cases, detach entirely while driving.

How much do car lips cost?

The price Liz referenced in her video is also fairly typical. Many aftermarket front lip spoilers cost between about $50 and $200, depending on the material and whether the part is designed for a vehicle model. Premium versions made from carbon fiber or other specialty materials can cost significantly more.

For Liz, the experience turned into an unexpectedly expensive lesson about how easily small aftermarket parts can disappear on the road. For viewers, however, the bigger surprise may have been discovering that cars apparently have “lips” at all.
