An argument at a gym has sparked a debate about race and gym etiquette. This began with a video shared by Inemesit Graham, a Black personal trainer and content creator in Yellowknife, Canada, that went viral on Instagram.
Graham said she was working out with five other Black women, combining weightlifting with laps around the gym’s indoor track, when an unidentified white male member allegedly pushed past one of her friends to grab dumbbells. According to Graham, he did not apologize or say “excuse me.” The women chose not to challenge him at the time and went to run a lap instead.
When they returned, they found their belongings scattered across the floor. Graham said their bags, resistance bands, weights, and sweaters had been moved off an exercise bench. One woman’s towel had been left near a trash can, while a water bottle was broken and had spilled water on the floor.
He made repeated threats to call the police
The man had reportedly moved the bench into the middle of the space the group had been using and was doing bench presses. When the women approached him about moving their belongings, Graham said he brushed off their concerns and insisted the gym was a “public space.”
Things became more tense when Graham started moving his dumbbells so the group could continue their workout. According to Atlanta Black Star, the man stood up and accused the women of being “aggressive” and “violent.” He also threatened to call the police.
A gym employee, whom Graham described as indigenous, tried to intervene and calm the situation. The man allegedly told her to “disengage” and “disassist” before finishing his set. He repeated his threat to contact law enforcement and eventually left the gym. Graham later reflected on what had happened, saying, “This is what it means to exist as Black women in predominantly white spaces.”
The video drew support from viewers who criticized the man’s reported treatment of the women and the way he characterized them during the confrontation. Some commenters argued that labeling the group “violent” while threatening to call the police reflected racial stereotypes that can put Black people at a disadvantage during disputes.
Others focused on whether the women had been using the gym equipment appropriately. Some argued that leaving personal items on a bench while running laps can prevent other members from using shared equipment. Under that view, the man may have had a legitimate reason to question whether the space was still being used, even if moving the women’s belongings was unnecessary.
Some viewers believed that this was more about gym etiquette
The disagreement has left viewers debating two issues at once: how gym members should share limited equipment and whether race influenced the way the confrontation unfolded. While some people saw the incident as an example of entitlement and racial bias, others said the discussion should also include expectations around reserving workout stations.
