Warning: the following article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Actor Daniel Kaluuya is sharing his thoughts about being included in a pivotal cameo scene in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The film, which was released in theaters last week, follows Miles Morales (Spider-Man) and Gwen Stacy (Spider-Woman) as they travel through the multiverse. During their journey, the pair encounter other Spider-People that are in charge of protecting their home. In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Kaluuya plays the role of Hobie Brown, also known as Spider-Punk.
Although in the movie, Kaluuya’s character Hobie Brown could have become an enemy of Morales due to both parties being romantically linked to Stacy, he would ultimately change the fixed opinions about him when he saves Morales from Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac) and leaves behind his portal watch so that Stacy can gather up a team to help Morales, who is stuck in Earth 42.
In addition to Brown becoming a hero in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, fans including Kaluuya were surprised when the live-action cameo of Donald Glover’s character Aaron Davis (Prowler), appeared on the screen. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kaluuya opened up about what it was like to see Prowler and if he knew anything about the cameo prior to the film’s release.
During the discussion, the 34-year-old revealed that despite being excited to see Prowler, he wasn’t aware of the cameo. Kaluuya would add that his lack of knowledge of Prowler’s appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse could be because he missed when the crew was talking about it due to the various events that occurred in the movie:
“No, I was not aware of that. (Laughs.) That was pretty cool. Afterwards, I was like, ‘Oh s***, I f***ing caught Glover’s Prowler.’ They may have mentioned it, but there was so much happening and I was so overwhelmed. So I don’t think I processed it until I watched it, but that’s a pretty cool Easter egg to be involved in.”
Kaluuya certainly wasn’t the only one caught off-guard by Glover’s live-action character appearing in the film, it probably goes without saying that we all were. As for whether or not we’ll be seeing more live-action shenanigans in Beyond the Spider-Verse, the film’s co-director is remaining tight-lipped on that matter for now.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.
