At long last, DJ Mag has unveiled their top 100 DJs list of 2015. While this year’s results made for a predictable, cross section of the mainstream EDM talent pool’s most accomplished echelon, perhaps nothing spoke to the state of the scene as much as the #1 entry.
Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike secured the #1 spot for the first time in their career, all but proving that contemporary dance music is more manufactured than it’s ever been at any point throughout its history. The two artists are famous for enlisting the services of ghostwriters like Maarten Vorwerk to assist in their productions, and engaged in notoriously aggressive marketing campaigns to drum up votes.
More than ever, the results simply prove that the rankings are more for which artists have the biggest marketing budgets than anything else.
[zergpaid]But I digress. The list itself played out mostly as expected, with a few notable mentions. For one, Don Diablo made the highest jump of any artist who charted, climbing from #82 to #30 between this year and last, while Oliver Heldens was the highest charting house DJ at #12 and Richie Hawtin was the highest techno DJ at #51.
Perhaps some of the more outspoken commentary on the results came from Morgan Page, who’s given us a piece of his mind about ghost producers in the past. The progressive house DJ/producer tweeted the following:
Who’s gonna be @djmag number 1 this year? Heard it’s gonna be an upset. We’ll see if it’s true in a few mins

There you have it.. Interesting results this year. Several really random DJs mixed in with lots of talented people — Morgan Page (@morganpage) October 16, 2015
Seems like the average voter is a 16 year old from Rotterdam
