‘Doesn’t make sense’: Kansas City Chiefs sweatshirt blamed for brutal murder in Missouri

A family in Independence, Missouri, just outside Kansas City, is grieving a senseless act of violence after police say Anthony S. Myers, a 45-year-old father, was fatally stabbed on Friday, September 19, 2025. According to law enforcement, Myers was killed over a Kansas City Chiefs sweatshirt.

The suspect, Trey C. Parker, 23, who says the sweatshirt belonged to him, is in custody, facing second-degree murder and related charges. Makalya Myers, Anthony’s daughter, told Kansas City’s KCTV, “It was violent, it was senseless, and it was just cruel.” She added, “I don’t even have the words; it just doesn’t make sense. This was not how he was supposed to die. This was not supposed to be in his story.”

According to Parker’s probable cause affidavit, the confrontation occurred after a garage sale, when Myers was wearing the red Chiefs sweatshirt that allegedly started the fight. Surveillance footage from a neighboring car wash parking lot, where the attack happened, captured the two men arguing face-to-face, with Parker eventually raising his right arm and stabbing Myers. Despite making it to a car, Myers succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital.

Myers and Parker were friends, and they were about to leave the garage sale for a nearby casino when the attack happened. Following the stabbing, Parker fled the scene, prompting a multi-day manhunt by the Independence Police. He was apprehended on Monday, September 22, and remains in custody with a $250,000 bond. His bond review hearing is scheduled on September 30.

Parker claimed self defense

In court, Parker claimed self-defense, alleging that Myers made a “stabbing” and “slashing” motion at him. However, detectives contradicted this account, citing surveillance footage that depicted a different sequence of events. Myers’ mother was at the scene of the crime, and she denied that her son attacked Parker first.

Myers is remembered as a loving father and a man who cherished his family above all else. His daughter, Makalya, hopes that her father’s legacy will inspire others to value their loved ones and resolve conflicts peacefully. She urges the community to remember her father for the good man he was, rather than the tragic circumstances of his death.
